Squeezing Every Drop from Your Tank

As motorcycles age, components wear out, leading to a gradual decline in fuel efficiency. However, a drop in mileage isn't a life sentence. You can restore it.

1. Clean the Air Filter

Your engine needs to breathe. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, forcing the engine to run "rich" (burning more fuel than necessary). Clean or replace it every 3,000 km.

2. Tire Pressure is Paramount

Riding with under-inflated tires increases rolling resistance dramatically. This forces the engine to work harder to maintain speed. Check pressure weekly.

3. Carburetor Tuning

If your older bike has a carburetor, it might need tuning. An improper air-fuel mixture ruins mileage. Have a mechanic clean the jets and tune the screw for optimal combustion.

4. Right Chain Tension

A chain that is too tight binds the sprockets, while a loose chain wastes power through slap. Maintain the manufacturer-recommended slack and keep it well-lubricated.

5. Change Your Riding Style

Avoid harsh acceleration and late, heavy braking. Ride in the highest gear possible without lugging the engine. Smooth throttle control is the biggest secret to great mileage.
