Providing Power When You Need It
The battery is the heart of your vehicle's electrical system. Without it, the engine won't crank. With a little care, you can easily extend a 3-year battery's lifespan to 5 years.
1. Clean Corroded Terminals
White or greenish powder around the posts restricts power flow. Clean it off with a mixture of baking soda and water using an old toothbrush, then coat it with petroleum jelly to prevent further oxidation.
2. Drive Your Vehicle Regularly
Vehicles inherently have "parasitic drains" (alarms, clocks, ECU memory) that slowly drain the battery when sitting idle. Drive your vehicle for at least 20 minutes a week to let the alternator fully recharge it.
3. Check the Clamps
A loose battery vibrates harshly while driving. Vibration damages the fragile internal lead plates, causing premature failure. Ensure the battery bracket is tightened down.
4. Distilled Water Top-Ups
If you have a non-maintenance-free lead-acid battery, unscrew the caps and check the fluid levels. If the lead plates are exposed, top them up strictly with distilled water (never tap water).
5. Turn Off Electronics Early
Turn off the AC, headlights, and radio before you shut off the engine. Additionally, do not run the infotainment system for extended periods with the engine off.
